When Should You See a Couples Therapist?
- You seem to rehash the same old arguments but nothing ever actually seems to change
- You feel hurt and resentful about past betrayals or disappointments
- You feel painfully disconnected and don’t know how to reach each other
- You don’t feel supported, valued, or loved on many occasions
These are just some of the reasons people choose to see a couples therapist…
Why Couples Therapy?
1. Sometimes you need the help of a neutral party:
When most people come to couples therapy it is because they don’t see eye-to-eye about what their issues are and who is to blame for them. This makes it difficult to resolve the issues and fully hear where the other person is coming from. The result is that communication can break down and result in arguments and blame. A couples therapist can help both of you take a step back and try something new. Rather than get stuck in a blame game, a couples therapist can help you see things in a new way and communicate differently about issues.
2. Sometimes you need help to understand the real issues:
Most couples end up arguing about little things that represent big issues. Rather than arguing about parenting styles, spending habits, work tendencies, or forgetfulness, a couples therapist can help you have a deeper conversation about what these things really mean. Oftentimes, when we look deep enough, we can see that surface arguments often lead back to more fundamental fears about how solid the relationship is and what we really mean to one another. A couples therapist can help you zoom out so you understand why something makes you really angry and why it really matters.
3. Sometimes you need new methods to get new results:
There is a saying that insanity is doing the same thing and expecting new results. This applies to relationships as well. How many times have you responded the same way to a criticism from your partner or ended up in the same old arguments? A couples therapist can bring new techniques and approaches to the table. As an EFT therapist I follow proven methods for how to help couples communicate in new ways and try new ways of interacting in problem situations.
4. Sometimes you need a safe space to be vulnerable with your feelings:
Most of the time couples end up in negative interactions with each other because they communicate through anger and silent treatments when they feel hurt, sad, lonely, or fearful. With the help of a couples therapist it can become safer to express some of the vulnerable feelings that underlie the tendency to push each other away. Through the guidance and support of a therapist you can get help to get more in touch with what you are really feeling and learn to let each other in.
Not Every Couples Therapy is the Same…
When choosing a couples therapist be sure to choose someone whose experience and expertise you trust
I am a psychologist with more than 15 years of experience. I have undergone specialized training as a Certified Emotionally-Focused couples therapist. EFT is widely recognized as one of the most effective approaches to helping couples restore their connection
What is EFT Couples Therapy?
1. A Scientifically Proven Method:
There are many different couples therapy approaches out there, but none that are as well researched as the EFT couples approach. Research on emotionally focused couples therapy has shown that upon completed treatment, 70-75% of couples move from distress to recovery, and approximately 90% show significant improvements.
2. A Clear Roadmap for Change:
When you choose an EFT couples therapist you can be assured that your therapist is not flying blind, but has a plan and a set of methods that will get you where you need to go. Many couples therapists out there use a combination of intuition and self-taught knowledge and don’t necessarily have a clear idea of how they are going to deliver you the results you want.
3. A Quality Guarantee:
Not everybody can become an EFT couples therapist. To become certified, a therapists must go through a rigorous training that includes extensive supervision of the therapist’s couples work. Only when the therapist has demonstrated effectiveness in faithfully using the model in their work and has met strict quality standards can they use the title.
4. An Approach that Feels Natural:
EFT is not about teaching you exercises and techniques that seem forced or don’t feel natural. It is essentially a method of making you be more of yourself in your relationship. It tries to bring out feelings from your authentic self that you can communicate in a way that feels natural. It stretches you to be more of yourself rather than teaches you to be someone or something else.
